Le Havre: a great discovery !

Published on

How did you choose your training?

I was able to choose this training to become a merchant navy officer thanks to a meeting with a retired captain during a “Carrefour des professions” organized by my high school. I joined ENSM in September 2020. I spent the first three years in Marseille and the last two in Le Havre. My parents come from Marseille: pretty cool for the start of my studies, but I was also happy to go to the other side of France!

With the internship at the end of the first year, which gives an overview of our future profession, I was reassured in my choice. Although the training is very theoretical with many classic courses and only a few practical exercises, it remains very concrete in its objective of graduating us as officers. I was lucky enough to be admitted to the most demanding course with dual training, on the bridge and on the machine: it is very enriching for each of the two sectors who cannot work without each other on board.

What do you want to do after your training?

After my training, I would like to become a merchant navy officer, that is to say, be a sailor on board a commercial ship, but while maintaining my versatility for a certain time. Shipping companies are currently looking for a lot of French sailors, which is an opportunity for us during post-training recruitment. Ideally, I would like to sign an employment contract with Bourbon Offshore Surf, the same company that recruited me for my six-month professionalization contract (between the fourth and fifth year).

What do you think of Le Havre as a student city?

As said before, I had no choice but to come and study in Le Havre, but it is a calm and pleasant city to live in. When you come from Marseille, everything seems calmer and calmer!

More seriously, I find the city spacious and I love walking by the sea. As a student, I really enjoy the BU: pleasant, spacious and rich in documentation.

I really like going to the Volcano: the student rate is very advantageous! The same goes for MuMa which is super welcoming to students: I went there three times!

There is a lot of transport to go see around and do a little sightseeing: coming from Marseille, it’s a whole region to discover! More down to earth, the city is full of nice bars for enjoying drinks in the warmth of a terrace!
